Why I love my dogs

The Lurchers woke me up at 3am this morning, needing to go outside. Nothing unusual about that but last night I could not get back to sleep. 3am is a bad time not to be able to get back to sleep. Your mind wanders and ponders and goes off in all sorts of directions. It wasn't any particular issues that were keeping me awake but more the state of my mind at the moment.

I seem to be constantly at the end of a very short fuse. I can be absolutely happy and fine one moment, and something will happen and I lose it. Zero to train wreck in a split second and that really can't be good for my blood pressure. Stupid little things annoy me and patience and tolerance are at an all time low.

There is one underlying issue that is the cause of this but I'm not ready to go there just yet.

Back to 3am, or rather, 4am by now... and I found myself getting really upset. Why was I so miserable? Why am I so short with everyone? Is the rest of my life going to be like this? Crying into my pillow, I felt a nudge in my ribs. Lurcher No.1 had been curled up at my feet but, sensing my distress, she moved up the bed and lay full length alongside me, and started nuzzling me with her nose, offering her comfort.

And that's why I love my dogs.

  1. Dogs are amazing how they can pick up on mood. Hope you can resolve the 'issue' and feel brighter soon.

  4. This is why we have dogs. Unconditional love. Your moods will pass but the dogs will stay.

  6. That's the thing about dogs - they're the ones that get you up at 3am in the first place -but they can still melt your heart.

BTW I hope you feel better soon

  7. Here's a big helping of Patience for you, Aoj! I HATE the "three AM, can't sleep" syndrome. I wish you a peaceful night's sleep tonight, and I'm glad the lurchers are there for you.

  10. I know, dogs are simply amazing. Sometimes I think Clara has saved my sanity at least half a dozen times with a similar display of love. I hope things are better soon.

  12. I have just spent a couple hours catching up on blogs and this post has been the absolute best so far. Oh man that brings a tear to my eye. Only because I know exactly what you're talking about. I really do wish humans could do this for each other.

  13. Hugs to you. I've been there and it's a horrible feeling. Luckily, since I'm allergic to dogs, I've found a cat that knows just when to come up and cuddle on the bed with me or give me a nose kiss. Sometimes I think she's the only living creature who can possibly love me when I get in a mood like that.

  14. Glad that The Lurchers (or more precisely Lurcher No.1 in this instance) are able to offer you comfort when you need it.

I do hope that things improve for you soon... but in the meantime those cold wet noses will poke you and nuzzle you when you most need it. You can count on that, it's just one of the many reasons Lurchers were made for :-)

The short fuse, lack of patience and tolerance - I seem to be in a similar place to you right now and also have an 'issue' I'm not yet ready to deal with and wonder if I ever will be. But still... life ticks along and those lurchery noses (obviously not the noses belonging to your lurchers!) offer comfort and divert the mind from wandering to far into unchartered territory.

    Take care matey.

  15. I'm sorry that something is troubling you. I'll leave virtually the same comment as I just left on another blog - why did I need a 2,000 word rant to say the same thing you just said in 200? Maybe I need a dog...

    Hope things resolve themselves soon.

  17. Dogs are the best. Although we have to be careful around Toby. If one of us gets too angry (even when it's not directed at him), he gets really upset and pukes. Poor pup - he's way too sensitive.

  18. I miss my comforting dog. I have so much wakefulness with this change of life time. The cat is delightfully ignorant of my moods. Feed them and be there when they wish to cuddle.

    Here's a hug --
