A brutal dose of reality (distressing post)

This was not the blog I was going to write for you today but I cannot bring myself to write a fun post when something like this happens.

Lisa at Greyhound Gap telephoned me this afternoon to say she'd had a call from the local dog-pound who had a greyhound in that needed collecting NOW.

In Lisa's own words:

"I knew when the local pound rang me to ask me to come over NOW and collect this boy it was going to be bad but I wasnt quite prepared for what I saw come out of the kennel. I have never in the history of Gap or all my rescue work come into contact with a dog still alive that is in the state that this boy is."

How can anyone let a dog get into this state? Why, in the name of all that's decent, could they have not handed him over to someone who could have cared for him? Why are there such heartless bastards out there who do this to animals? Why? Can someone answer me that question because I certainly can't.

  1. Cor, it's beyond me Angela!!!

I think some people have NO idea that dogs and other animals are sentient beings.

Bastards - I hope the RSPCA busts there asses GRRR

  2. Based on his face, he look like a young dog? Words can not express the horror...any clue at all how he got that way? Underlying illness...something? Otherwise, it just makes NO SENSE.

  3. Celeste, we have no idea but the pressure sores would indicate that he had been kept in a small space and just left. Morph, as he now called, is off to the emergency vets this afternoon so Lisa will know more about his condition then.

  4. OMG, did the pound say how they'd acquired him? I can't believe the dog ran away, he hardly looks like he can stand up. Hope he can be saved - and hope his former owners rot.

  5. So, so sorry. The inhumanity of man is how my husband refers to this type of behavior. Thank goodness there are people like you in the world to offset that type of cruelty and idiocy.

  11. I'm surprised he's still alive. Poor thing! Make him up a huge bowl of oatmeal and hamburger meet. (That's what the vet had us feed our Irish Setter when he started losing weight out of the blue - high calories)

  12. I'm still shaking my head in disbelief after seeing him earlier on Gap.

I have never been able to comprehend how anyone can leave any animal in this state, but sadly and sickeningly they do...

Thank goodness for organisations such as Gap, who come in and pick up the pieces and give these poor neglected creatures the chance of a life. A life of love, comfort, food and cuddles - all the things our own hounds experience every day.

Morph, you have landed on your paws today - Gap will keep you safe and will help you heal. Sending much love.xx

  14. Oh, his little face and eyes make me want to cry. I've never seen a dog so skinny. Thank goodness the pound called. Now he'll be well cared for! I suspect he won't quite know how to take kindness, the poor boy.

  15. Holy Shit...thank God he found Lisa, his savior. I am sure he will make a wonderful pet once his physical body heals...poor guy. I think his previous owners should be castrated.

  16. I always try to think that there is still some humanity left in this world despite what this lovely angel has suffered--that's people like those in your greyhound rescue group who can see a brighter future for this boy with care and love.

  17. Poor baby, there are time my Scruff looks a little scruffy between visits to the groomer - but there is no excuse to miss treat and neglect and anamial.

  18. Why indeed? Those of us with the capacity to love cannot answer that one for you! Sorry to say I have seen worse than this poor chap and not only in dogs, children also face this fate in the wrong hands. I think humans are the worst species on earth. Some are so rotten there is simply no hope for them. Hopefully this little guy is now looking forward to a better life. I hope he is not beyond trusting. Love and healing thoughts coming his way! Seeing a defenseless life in this state is the one thing that can make me aggressive.

  19. I'm sitting here in tears for that poor dog, not helped by the fact that my good deed in taking in a Lurcher who was going to be dumped has just cost me ALL my Lurchers: she was black, a houdini & was caught misbehaving. My boys are black, so the farmer wanted them & the pups (mainly black) shot ~ even coming on to my land, threatening my daughter with his shotgun to kill dogs asleep on my bed. Thank God a wonderful rescue centre agreed to take the puppies at short notice, but the adults were collected by the dog warden & I feel that I've betrayed my boys who kept us safe. I think if my violent ex ever found us that they'd lick him to death, but just being here & being tall dogs made us feel safe as he never stalked Annon when she had Tig with her.
(We're fairly sure that said farmer has been letting my puc goat (billy) out of his field ~ certainly someone has been leaving gates open & sometimes letting puc out then shutting the gates &, no, he can't escape his field because of his huge horns ~ I fenced my field in to prevent my dogs & goats getting into the field he rents, so he can no longer wander in & out of it willynilly to see his cattle because he'd rather walk up the lane & through my field than across the big field he rents...)

I love all my animals ~ they're my family & I've been publicly ridiculed online for grieving over dead stock ~ & my animals are known for being loved & in good health

Thank you Gap for all your work

  22. I just have to keep coming back to that face and reminding myself that the precious sweetheart is in good hands now.

  23. Oh my God AoJ, the poor little love. How can people be so vile? And he looks such a sweet soul. I really hope someone is prosecuted and prevented from ever owning another animal.

  24. I cannot fathom the heart of a person who would treat an animal (or a person) this way - but they do exist. Bless you and the Gap for helping to care for these wounded creatures.
