Need help with a plant identification

**Warning: I seem to be getting some spam comments on this post with a link that takes you off to some spyware site that appears to start scanning your pc. If you see on of these in my Comment box - please don't click on the link!

Back to the main feature:

This plant has started growing in my herb bed and I haven't got the slightest idea what it is. Anyone any clues?

UPDATE: Lesley came up trumps, it's Small Flowered Bittercress. Thank you Lesley!

  1. I have no idea exactly what it is, but it definitely looks like a weed to me.

  2. I think it is Viola palustris (marsh violet). The only thing that puzzles me slightly is that it is growing in your herb bed which I would have thought was dry and well drained. Perhaps you should do an image search in Google and see what you think.

  4. Having seen the mint leaves and knowing that mint likes moist conditions I can understand viola palustris growing amongst it.

  5. Lesley, I tried Googling but with not much luck.

It might tell you something if the one thing in my herb bed that is growing rampant is watercress!

Thank you KC and RC... *snorting with laughter!*

  6. Lesley, I did another Google for Marsh Violet and although it's close, I don't think that's it. The leaves look right but not the flowers. Perhaps I need to wait until they open a bit

  7. I'm no good at identifying plants I usually have to ask for help myself.

I had a few of those spam comments after clicking on the first I now know to delete the comment immediately and that seems to have done the trick.

  9. If it is Viola palustris it will have stolons and probably spread like mad. When it flowers the flowers will be very fragrant. I have my doubts too looking at the buds but they could develop quite a bit before the flower is fully open. It does seem to be the perfect place for it to grow.

  10. I think I will be up all night thinking about this one! The flowers look like Cardamine parviflora but the leaves look like a Viola.
